Description

In this advanced harmonies class, students will explore intricate harmonies, with a deep dive into the art of barbershop quartet singing, often known as "Sweet Adelines" in the female vocal community. Barbershop is renowned for its rich, ringing chords and intricate vocal arrangements, offering a unique blend of close harmony, precision, and musical storytelling. This class will challenge advanced vocalists to refine their ear for harmony, develop the ability to sing complex parts in a quartet setting, and master the art of blend and balance. Students will learn to create the distinctive "barbershop sound" through signature ringing chords, dynamic phrasing, and shifting tonal colors, all while enhancing their ability to sing with clarity and emotion. Throughout the course, participants will work on both classic and contemporary barbershop arrangements, with a focus on rhythm, phrasing, and articulation. Special attention will be given to the lead, tenor, baritone, and bass parts (with their equivalents in all-female singing), as well as how to harmonize effectively in small ensemble settings. The class will include both group and solo practice, helping each singer develop their vocal technique while fostering strong ensemble skills. By the end of the session, students will have honed their harmonizing abilities and gained a deeper understanding of barbershop quartet artistry. Participants will be ready to bring the joyful, vocal excellence of barbershop to any performance. Note: Participants in this class must be able to match pitch!
