ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Function

The Artistic Director (AD) is responsible for carrying out the mission of CYT locally and to protect the CYT brand, culture, quality, and overall experience of the local Branch. The role provides vision and passion to the local staff, teachers, artistic teams, students, and the community at large. The AD also ensures that the local vision aligns with the larger vision and mission of CYT Inc.

Immediate Supervisors: CYT Board of Directors / accountable to Managing Director.

Direction To:  Staff, Site Coordinators, Camp Coordinator, Artistic Teams, Teachers, and Production Staff

Job Classification / Hours:  Independent contractor, Part-time, Hours vary (avg 40 hrs/mo)

Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Qualifications
  • Must have a humble and teachable spirit that is concerned with sharing the love of Christ in word and deed to all affected by the organization.
  • Must have experience and education in working with children and adults, must demonstrate an ability and willingness to work in a creative and positive manner with both.
  • A degree in Theater Arts, Musical Theater, Communications, Music or Education or some related performing arts field is preferred. 
  • Demonstrates strong leadership and speaking capabilities.
  • Experience as a Director of a theater arts program and a strong understanding of both the artistic side and business side of a theater organization is preferred.
  • Experience in some aspect of theater (i.e., performer, producer, director, choreographer, conductor, musical director). 
  • Must have an understanding of all aspects of theater production. (Lighting, sound, scene design, costuming, script development, special effects, etc.) 
  • Must demonstrate experience in education, administration, event planning, fundraising, and working with committees and boards. 
  • Must demonstrate experience in managing a staff. 
  • Must have some flexibility as work hours may fluctuate.

Job Responsibilities | Tasks
  • Develop and give vision and direction for CYT programming including, but not limited to, classes, camps, shows and all branch level programming (CYT @ School, CCT, HYPE, etc.).
  • Oversee the educational curriculum for all classes. 
  • Maintain artistic quality of all productions including overseeing the production staff in mounting CYT shows. 
  • Oversee the hiring, training, and review process for all teachers, counselors and artistic teams for classes, camps, and shows along with the Managing Director (MD) and Site/Show/Camp Coordinators. 
  • Maintain rapport with staff, teachers, directors, technical crew, parents, students, volunteers, and community at large. 
  • Conceptualize, plan, and develop long term goals and initiatives and report them to the Board of Directors. 
  • Work closely with the Managing Director and Board to develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive fundraising and donor development program.
  • Must be part of the Artistic Team of at least one show per year. 
  • Oversee and guide the selection of shows for each chapter. 
  • Oversee and approve all marketing materials. 
  • Help create financial goals for shows and classes and a plan to accomplish the goals alongside with MD through a board approved annual budget. 
  • See all produced shows and experience classes and camps first-hand to observe quality and the administration of the program. 
  • Attends CYT’s National Leadership Conferences and/or EXPO
  • Oversee the process, experience and productions of classes, camps, shows, and programs for the Branch. 
  • Must attend Board of directors meetings. 
  • Must have an active and intentional focus on relationship building at all levels of the organization.

A CYT Teacher’s Philosophy
By incorporating CYT’s Values and Objectives into everything he or she does, the CYT teacher strives to build character in students. Pre-planning, organizing, and communicating with the Artistic Director are major steps in reaching this goal. A conscious focus on the students as individuals must be of highest priority at all times, with the content of class instruction designed to meet their needs. A spirit of servanthood is an essential trait of any CYT teacher.

Basic Function:
To train and instruct students in specified area of competence in such a way as to promote the development of character, self-esteem, and confidence.

Qualifications:
  • Must understand CYT's Mission Statement and Values and Objectives and be willing to incorporate them when performing job-related tasks.
  • Must have theater experience and/or education pertaining to a class being taught.
  • Must show evidence of ability to use appropriate and effective methods of instruction.

Artistic Teams

Artisitic Team Members Include:

Artistic Team Members must:
  • Have proficiency, passion and past experience in their expertises:
    • Directors must know and love theater and know the various aspects of mounting a major production. He/She must know how to motivate actors, create stage pictures, inspire cast and crew and lead the entire company to reach their vision.
    • Musical Directors must know how to read music (and play to some extent) and teach rhythm, melodies and harmonies.
    • Choreographers must know and love to teach various styles of dance and be able to tell a story and create stage pictures with movement and dance.
  • Love children, love working with children, and love to see growth in the lives of all children, not just the leads.
  • Be strong moral role models. The children look up to these individuals and the responsibility of being exemplary cannot be overstated. Because we are “Christian Youth Theater,” it is preferred that the Artistic Team understand what it is to be a Christian and live a Christian lifestyle.
  • Be Enthusiastic and encouraging. People always respond better to someone who is positive. Someone who consistently encourages and gives positive reinforcement or will accomplish much more than a leader who is negative, sarcastic and harsh.
  • Demand and strive for excellence. Artistic Team members must not be satisfied with mediocrity. They must be willing to put in the extra time and effort to make sure that a production is the best it can be all things considered
  • Be a team player. They must be excited and willing to work with other people on their artistic team. Each member must be committed to negotiation, compromise and submission to each other. The “good” of the “bigger picture” must be the focus.

Function: Supervises all aspects of the production in conjunction with the rest of the Artistic Team and the parent  committees. Conceptualizes the stage production, directs the actors, and instructs artistic team.

Qualifications:
  • Must understand CYT Mission Statement and Values and Objectives and be willing to incorporate them when performing job-related tasks.
  • Must have professional and/or educational experience in theater arts with specific emphasis in directing.
  • Must have experience in, desire and ability to work with children.
  • Must possess the ability to create a positive, organized, and effective learning environment.

Musicians

Though many shows now have high-quality instrumental tracks, there are still plenty of opportunities for local musicians in the community to utilize their talents for the stage.  From pianists to percussionists, the magic of a live orchestra breathes life and energy into our shows and into the performers.

CYT has endless opportunities for internships of all kinds.  Stage direction, music, choreography, costume design, set building, graphic design, administration, and more!  Working with CYT is a great way to improve your skills, grow your knowledge, and gain experience working in all aspects of theater and business.  Internships happen in our local CYT class and show facilities.
